Impact experiments of porous targets) to study the craterization and catastrophic disruption of the minor bodies of the Solar System, surface evolution of planets (Mercury, Mars, Venus) and moons (Saturn’s satellites), sandblast.
Impact tests performed using the light gas gun located at the hypervelocity impact facility at CISAS “G. Colombo Univ.Padova.
Experimental data to support data interpretation of remote sensing from planetary exploration mission such as Cassini/Huygens, Deep Space Impact, Rosetta, Dawn, MarsExpress, VenusExpress, BepiColombo.
Other applications:
- Study of the disturbance effects induced by hypervelocity particles (e.g. micrometeorits and space debris) on the structure of spacecrafts and on payload.
- Support for space instrument validation and qualification tests
Physical characterization of targets before and after impact;
high speed shadow photographs of impact events, impact velocity and energy;
Analysis of the collisional outcomes:ejecta/fragment velocity and direction distribution,morphological analysis and properties of crater structure, electron microscopy (SEM) images,fragments mass and size distributions
Laboratory activity is ongoing, also in relation with specific needs coming from remote sensing data analysis and interpretation or research programs
